Southern Miss Throwbacks

Great look, minus the black socks.  Former-Dr. Saturday breaks it down for Eye on College Football (CBS).

WVU Gray

Here is what the new gray WVU uni's will look like when all paired together.  I would've liked to see the gold featured with blue outline, or a new (or old school) look instead of their current white design and have the only thing change is the white replaced with gray.  The helmet looks nice, with a little pro-combat heritege in there.  Hopefully they either wear the entire set together on the road to replace the all white, or wear the gray pants with the blue, yellow and white tops.  I am not a fan of light shirts on dark pants and I don't even wanna know what gray on yellow or white will look like.

When I played Heisman mode on NCAA Football '12, I played at WVU and mix and matched their current set with their pro-combat and it didn't look half bad, but it also didn't go together.  Those helmets though....nasty

Here's what the complete set looked like vs. Pitt.

Duke going with a matte black helmet.  I am all for flat-black.  Even if it is en vouge, along with white helmets.  It's Duke football, so who cares?

Iowa Throwback

This is the throwback that will be worn for Iowa's first home game, honoring the 1921-22 team.  I don't mind it at all, but I don't like going back to wear the uniforms from the pre-helmet era.  But yeah, the bronze looks sweet with the black.

THE PLAYOFF IS COMING...THE PLAYOFF IS COMING! *UPDATE*

You now have a chance

*UPDATE*
Last night, after meeting in The District, the conference commishiners and the university presidents that starting for the 2014 season, there will be a 4-team playoff, selected by a committee with an emphasis on strength of schedule and conference champions.

The two semi-final games will be rotated between 6 bowls, presumably the 4 BCS bowls and two others, with some speculation considering the "Champions Bowl" in Dallas and one other New Year's bowl such as the Citrus or maybe the Cotton.  The championship game will go to "the highest bidder" similar to the NFL championship.  That leaves a lot to be desired, but it will all get figured out, and if Ohio State is playing in San Diego or in some dome in the first week of Janurary, I will watch (and hopefully go).  I would like to see 3 bowls involved for the final four and championship game, but truth be told, they are all fields and the two best teams will be playing for a true, college football championship.

Another part of this playoff machine is the committee.  I can't wait to see twitter kill itself when the committee is announced.  If Mark May, Trev Alberts or Craig James are in the parking lot of the building that is holding the selection room, I'll move to Canada.  If they wanted the four best teams, take each bookie for the major sportsbooks in Vegas and let them decide, beacuse they are right. Every time.

I'm sure everyone will be able to bitch about someone in the committee, but whatever, I nominate myself.  Here are a few of my rules:

1) Only one SEC team
2) Ohio State always gets in
3) Wisconsin needs to be undefeated and have a passer over 2,000 yards
4) Notre Dame never gets in, ever. Period
5) Clemson gets bonus points for being in the discussion
6) Let me see the coaches' wives, please
7) Let me see your student section (Sun Devils, Texas, any SEC team)
8) Adidas schools get docked.  You better have double-digit wins.  Under Armour, same deal.
9) Let me see your student section again.
10) Let me see your losses.  Oh, you lost to a 6-6 team?  OUT

There you go.  The perfect system is far away, but at least we have a system that involves a playoff and the "best" teams playing each other to get to the championship.  Life could be worse.  Oh and if you're the 5th best team and you're left out, SHADDDDDDUP (see no. 10 above).

Whichever the details, the fact that a president of a university mentioned playoff and that they have signed off on it is a win for college football.  And America.
__________________________________________________________________________________
Looks like 2013 will be the last season of the BCS.  Let me write that again.  After the 2013 season, there will be no more BCS.  There will be a 4-team playoff, with two of the "BCS Bowls" hosting the semi-finals, and the final game to be bid on like the Super Bowl.  Their will be a committee who chooses the final four teams, which will set off another huge debate...but don't lose sight of the fact that there will be a champion crowned in college football, that came from teams playing each other.  How we get the 4 teams is all details and will not be perfect, but whatever...there will be 4 teams playing for one championship.

I personally didn't have a problem with how the BCS rated the two teams or why they would need to come up with a new formula or super secret committee in a bunker in New Mexico to come up with the 4 best teams after 14 weeks.  If you lose to a sub-.500 team, you're out.

When it comes to protecting the regular season, instead of only two sports, there are now 4 sports, so now 2 more teams and everyone they have/will have played matter.  The regular season now has more games that matter.  Instead of one loss in October and having no more November games mattering, there are more games in November that matter.  Beat who you should, and no undefeated teams will be left out, which is part of the goals.  Give the undefeated TCUs or Boises the chance to play the big boys in December for a chance of the crown.

Another issue is the bowls...what happens to the ones that don't matter?  Let me tell you something, none of the bowls really matter outside of the BCS Title game anyway, so who cares?  They are only 4 teams in the playoffs.  Every other bowl-eligible team will be able to play in their bowl, just like they do now, and the 2 BCS bowls who are not in the semis will still get the other best teams and make a lot of money and all that jazz...The only thing that changes is that instead of 2 teams are put into the title game, with 1 or 2 other teams that could get in as well, now all have a chance.

There is no doubt that the 4 team will be turned into 8 team down the line, but for right now, this is a great thing for college football.  The details will take care of themselves and the 5th and 6th teams will always be pissed, but there is a playoff.  We are here, a lot sooner than 2020 when I thought it would happen.  Let the games begin!

LeBatard goes off after Heat win the title

Since I have a desk job and have had one for just over a year, I sit in my cube, enter data and stream sports radio.  In the morning, on my drive into downtown Columbo, I hit up the Morning Zoo on WNCI 97.9.  I simply cannot take Mike and Mike (unless they get after certain coaches in the B1G)...

9:00-12:00 Dan Patrick show on DPShow.com
12:00-3:00 Jim Rome on ESPNCleveland.com
3:00-4:30 Common Man & The Torg 971thefan.com or the Dan LeBatard Show

I am a huge MYGUY fan, but I can't stream their show on the Internet, which is a total pain in the ass, so I head on down to 790 The Ticket in Miami for a few hours.  I went down there when everything was happening in the summer of 2010 to get their perspective, and his show is really funny.

Anyway...After the Heat do something, like when they got James, when they took Boston out and after they won the title, Dan goes on a tirade and yells a few things about the city and team, then yells, "GIVE IT TO ME AGAIN" and compares the city of Miami to everything.  It's great.  Here is the latest rant after the 3 kings got their first crown together.

Over the weekend...

It's been real Boston.  Off to the
south side of Chitown

This guy will spend the rest of his life in jail.

I attended the Twins-Reds game on Satuday with one of my college buddies, his college buddy and my homey from high school and OSU.

This guy was traded from the Sawx to the Sawx.

This guy hit a walk-off for the Fightin' Phillies and made some money.

UCLA offered Snoop Dogg's soon-to-be sophomore son a scholarship.  I hope they hire Master P's son a coaching position and get Faith Evans a board of director's spot.  There is nothing better than 1990s rap.  No doubt DMX could coach Cover 1.

The Heat win, LBJ MVP

The Heat won the NBA championship and James was named MVP of the Finals after he was named regular season MVP for the 3rd time.  He closed out the Thunder with 26 points, 11 rebounds and 13 assists.

Here are James' numbers:
Season: 27.1 PPG, 7.9 RPG, 6.2 APG
Postseason: 30.3 PPG, 9.7 RPG, 5.6 APG

The best player was the best player in the playoffs and when it mattered the most, the NBA Finals.  Now all the hate the media gave to James will now be love.

Obviously, I am a Cleveland fan, and was crushed when things went down the way they did in the summer of 2010, and after he lost last year and said, basically, that everyone is happy we lost, but my life is better than yours and tomorrow, when you wake up, your life will still suck and I'll be fine.

I am sad as a Cleveland fan, and I turned off the game last night with 6 minutes left.  Partly because I was dead tired and partly because I didn't want to watch the Heat and their horrible fans celebrate a championship.

I think James has matured, and all everyone really wanted is for him to go '07-Pistons when it mattered the most, instead of quitting in the closeout game vs. Boston in 2010 (I will NEVER get over that) and last year in the Finals.  He took control, and especially in game 6 at the Garden this year, he was in total FU mode.  Give me the ball, and 1) get out of my way and 2) crash the boards in case I happen to miss it.

He didn't stop in the Finals, and was the definite leader for Miami.  I truly and happy for James, who had the pressure of the entire sports world on his shoulders.  It does seem he has grown up and become a person with a lot more self-awareness.  He has the title he could never get in Cleveland, and it took one year with Wade and Bosh and a few inconsistent role players to finally get it.  They look like a force to be reckoned with a la Jordan in the United Center.

Arkansas football unis for 2012

Arkansas has made some changes since they went 11-2 and had their starting QB and stud RB that has returned from injury.  The Razorbacks looked like a top 5 team that was ready to challange 'Bama and LSU (both teams come to Fayettesville) for the SEC and National crown.  However, their coach had a motorcycle accident, was fired, and the best coach of all time now leads pig sooie for 2012.  They have also changed their look.  Not a drastic change, but added some silver razor wire thingy on the shoulders and a black uni option.  Also, to fit the mold of every other team, they have added a white helmet for the first time ever.

I don't really mind the shoulder thing, but the two-tone numbers, adding a black uni and a white helmet option really is played out.  The all white look will be nice, but it's not really Arkansas.  Whatever, time to move on I suppose.

That Queen City

Looks like on Saturday I am headed down to the GABP to catch the 'legs and Twinkies duke it out in an interleague tilt.  First pitch: 4:10.  I am staying with Heider (with Hale to join after he gets off of work at 2PM on a Saturday, sounds like a bunch of terrorism to me) and with two days before the ball game, he came through and got us tickets, which I turned into a picture.  Here is wehre we will be "sitting" even though the plan is to get in early to capture a Sean Casey bobblehead (the only requirement to receiving free tickets) and head to the bar in left field.  Anyway, here are our tickets:

And no, my year and a half old daughter did not write that for me.  It's hard to write with a mouse, aholes.

VTECH Camo Jerseys

These are the camo jerseys the Hookies will wear this year at home.  They are pretty "boring" for a camo set, but with the maroon trim and the camo numbers (sleeve numbers a huge bonus), along with wearing white at home, I love the look.  It's rare for Nike to go the other way when introducing new uniforms, so this is a nice, classic, clean tribute to those who make it easy to watch the game we love on fall weekends.
